Meditation in Myanmar

A Myanmar tour is distinguished from others as apart from sightseeing, exploration, and entertainment it can offer tourists Buddhist Vipassana Meditation, which is only available in a country with the population of about 90% Buddhists.
There are loads of Vipassana Meditation Centers based on Buddha’s teaching being widely taught throughout the country.
That Myanmar meditation is taught during ten-day residential courses so that it is considered to be the minimum necessary period for new students. During that short time, learners can fully understand the technique and its benefits through their own experience. For one about to plan the Meditation trips in Myanmar, some details on the Meditation Centres as below could be of some help.

Monasteries or Pagodas are a good place to Meditate in Myanmar

Chanmyay Yeiktha
Chanmyay Yeiktha is mainly regared as a meditation centre but is also a monastery with resident monks who are the meditation teachers. It is for both foreigners and Myanmar mediators, but foreign learners are well catered for and often have their own quarters and schedules. Accommodations for men and women are separate, clean and simple, complete with bed linen and mosquito nets. Mediators are served daily with two healthy meal one at dawn, another just before noon. In the evening, orange just are supplied. For vegetarian, they can ask for their different type of food. People eat together in the dinning hall in a slow, quiet and mindful manner. There clean, safe drinking water is available.

Mediators, who are on a long-term course, are offered an undoubtedly excellent chance of being a monk, novice or nun. This opportunity will enhance your experience in meditation and Myanmar.

Mahasi Meditation Center
With the purpose of propagating the Buddha Sasana through scriptural learning and practice of Vipassana meditation, Buddha Sasana Nuggaha Organization was established in 1947 in Myanmar. Being a non-profit organization, it runs the Mahasi Meditation Center with subscriptions from its members and voluntary donations from devout Buddhists throughout the country.
It is only about twenty minutes driving by taxi from the Yangon Mingaladon International Airport, or about ten minutes by car from the Tourist Center in downtown Yangon to the Center. It does not a matter to the native to find that place, but nor to foreigners. The Center is clearly shown in Tourist guide maps and there is also a noticeable signboard at the jintersection of Kaba Aye Pagoda and Sasana-yeiktha Road to guide the visitor.
Yogis from abroad who seek for admission should be ready as they would need to take a full-time Vipassana meditation course which lasts from 6 to 12 weeks - that duration is considered an appropriate period of retreat for one to gain a basic knowledge and experience of Vipassana meditation. Foreign Yogis about to meditate at the Center should contact the organization in writing in advance, showing their knowledge of the Buddha-dhamma and previous experience of Buddhist meditation. For more details, the name and address of the center where they have mediated and the Mediation Teacher under whom they have been trained should be included in their writing.
